Stone Hardness Scale (Mohs Scale). What does that mean?

Strona główna » Blog » Stone Hardness Scale (Mohs Scale). What does that mean?

The Mohs hardness scale was developed by the German miner Friedrich Mohs in 1812 by the German miner Friedrich Mohs.

This is a mineral grade system for scratch resistance where the hardness value is determined by comparing one mineral to another.

Materials are categorized from 1 to 10, with 1 representing the lowest hardness and 10 representing the highest.

Importance of Mohs hardness in gemstones:

The Mohs hardness of gemstones is an extremely important factor, both when assessing their quality and when grinding them.

High hardness stones are more resistant to scratches and damage, which makes them ideal for jewelry that is worn everyday.

For example, diamonds with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale are often chosen for engagement rings due to their durability.

Stones with a lower hardness are more susceptible to scratches and damage, so they may be more suitable for occasional jewelry or for special occasions where they are not exposed to everyday use.
